The Boreal Forest is a green ribbon painted across Canada – and, while its vastness can feel isolating at times, it also links us all together.

Boreal Collective is a group of seven Canadian documentary photographers. The Boreal Forest is a green ribbon painted across Canada – and, while its vastness can feel isolating at times, it also links us all together. The collective was born out of a desire to collaborate outside of our individual practices and unearth stories from across the country we call home. Just like the forest, we are diverse, wild and embedded in our communities.

As we become inundated with an overflow of images, we're plagued with the question: ‘what will become of our digital files?' The collective's mandate is return to the physicality of the medium with the intention of being communicators with images, rather than simply collectors of images. Self-publishing documentary work about the Canadian human experience, our emphasis is on putting work into the world by creating physical objects in the form of zines, photo books and public exhibitions, that will outlive a hard drive and build a long-lasting record of Canadian stories.

Please note that Boreal does not accept applications for membership, nor is the collective an agency that offers representation.
